| What Makes a Top Producer? | Part 2: Maintain A Laser Focus |
|
A couple of years ago I won tickets to the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, CA. We planted our chairs on the South Course’s 4th hole, along the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was an incredible day with fantastic views as hang gliders sailed up and down the shoreline bobbing in and out of our sight. As beautiful as the setting was, it was the human feat that that made the deepest imprint. We arrived at our perch well ahead of the golf play and were completely distracted by the scenery when suddenly the crowd grew silent and magically one golf ball, then another and another, fell on the green, resting within 3 feet of the hole. Looking back down the fairway you could see that the players were at least 150 yards away. Those results were repeated throughout the day with the last threesome including Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. As they moved on to other holes, we followed. At one point we were within 10 feet of Tiger and we could see he had his game face on. As he approached the next tee you could tell he had blocked out everything around (oblivious) as he concentrated on the next setup and drive. It was an incredible display of laser focus. It occurred to me that this is a key characteristic of all top achievers and producers; to create and maintain a laser focus. It is a deliberate and finely honed state of mind, necessary to become a true champion of champions. But, what does one focus on? The process will not be productive unless you focus on the right object. Let’s go back to the 4th hole. The laser focus of those golfers did not start 150 yards out from the green. No, as we noted with Tiger, the mind set is fixed before driving from the tee. This means that each golfer had to vision the ball landing in the hole before he hit the first drive. Before each subsequent hit they would reset their visualization of ball dropping into the hole and reverse engineer all of their techniques and skills to fulfill that vision. The fact is that their laser focus was practiced before they entered the tournament; it has been exercised on every practice putt and drive they had ever made since they discovered their passion for the game. So we come to the heart of the lesson; First, you create a vision of where you want to go and what you want the results to be. Next, you map out your course. Then you set a laser focus on getting there (passion and determination). Finally, move toward the vision. The process is truly one of elimination - if something doesn’t fit (belong) in your vision, remove it and keep moving forward. It is a rather simplistic view, but if you keep the vision in sharp laser focus and stay on track you will reach your objectives. In part III we will discuss the importance of practicing solid sales habits, the third quality common to top producers.
