Stop Doing That!

George Schnarre - If you have ever held an Open House in a snow storm or tried to conduct business when a tornado siren goes off, then please concentrate on this next sentence:   “Stop Doing That!” 

As the economy is getting tougher people gravitate to professional common sense and thrift.   They naturally shy away from irrational behavior and extravagant spending without purpose.   People want productivity not excuses.

I recently spoke with a gentlemen who was getting out of the real estate industry because it was too expensive.  I asked him what his main expense was and he said advertising.   Knowing that he lives in an area where they haven’t had five days of good weather in a row since last September, I asked what was he spending his advertising dollars on.  He said he had been spending about $2000 a month just on print advertising alone.  “People expect their homes to be advertised and the magazines and newspapers don’t offer rainy day credits.  So regardless of the weather, people expect their homes to be advertised or they will work with somebody else.” 

Wow, if this line of thinking is familiar to you then hear this clearly: “Stop Doing That!” 
In 2011, we have access to an unprecedented amount of information that you must learn how to use.  At our finger tips is the weather forecast, awareness of national events that you should not try to compete with, (Open house on Super Bowl Sunday, Fail!) and most of all; free advertising!

Yes, free advertising.  With the ability to put videos online for free, what are you doing to send your listing viral?  In a society that enjoys creative use of all the technology that is available, are you really still spending $2000 a month on newspapers and magazines?  You could pull up the names and information of everyone that lives within a four block area and send them personalized M&M’s and get all kinds of buzz rather than spending advertising money the old fashioned way.  

If you believe that the sale of a home ”Is a long haul rather than a sprint.”  “Stop Doing That!”
Success is always achieved by adapting and committing to what works today.  Your ability to capitalize on free advertising, create buzz,  generate activity, and drive trends is what’s important today.  If you get out there and “Start Doing That!”, you’ll never have to stop doing anything again.
