Public speaking offers a unique path of opportunity. Not only will it provide exposure in numbers but develops a rapport with the audience of credibility, knowledge and proficiency. The ability to offer information in an authentic and genuine manner develops confidence in the speaker, and allows the speaker to connect with large numbers all at once. A deep, powerful presence and relaxed self-expression emerges naturally when seen and heard in a supportive environment. Connection is everything, and connecting with the audience on a subject of mutual interest creates an instant level of trust. For this to happen, information comes from the heart, with a balance of pertinent information and not just blasting information to the audience. It starts with preparing from the inside out – attitude, knowledge and having a heart for the audience. Clarity in delivery is crucial. Review, practice, simplify the delivery and practice. Notice practice was mentioned twice. Although there are always times when you will be required to speak impromptu, practicing is the only way to ensure your delivery will be flawless. Review all the words and become comfortable pronouncing any words that are difficult. Eliminate repeat use of words. Thesauruses are a great resource. The goal in every spoken interaction is to have the message understood. Building instant rapport with the audience allows the audience members to trust and feel your concern for their success. Sharing humorous anecdotes or poignant stories establishes a powerful association, an emotional connection that connects with the audience and gives them the feeling that there is a conversation directed to him or her. Every speaker has a unique way of relating to the audience. Speaking isn’t difficult, it’s a matter of being relaxed, connecting with the audience by providing relevant information that will improve audience’s life, make their business more productive, and increase their overall knowledge. Bring your best qualities and strengths into every speaking engagement, share knowledge honestly and the audience will be captivated. As a speaker you have a rare opportunity to connect with your audience. Allow yourself to be imperfect….it is usually the quirkiness of a speaker that becomes the draw for the audience. You are not a know-it-all, but have a significant amount of knowledge that will be valuable to the audience. Allow your very presence to penetrate the audience. They will know you are genuine, that you care about them. No, speaking isn’t difficult. Preparation is the key. Connecting with the audience with a pertinent topic is important. Being genuine is important. Having passion for helping other is important. Speaking isn’t difficult; it is the preparation that takes work. It pays off when your relationship with the audience becomes long reaching and pays dividends throughout your career.
