Old Tools, New Applications

Have you heard the term ‘turning lemons into lemonade’?  Have you ever had someone say to you, “Give a man a fishing pole and teach him how to fish and he’ll feed himself forever.”?   Ever notice that the people that say these things usually have never caught a fish and have never picked lemons off a tree?

The truth is that right now professionals are looking for productive help not happy platitudes!

I sat with a gentleman the other day and showed him how to build an information relationship while sitting in front of his computer.  I showed him how to pull up information that is useful, interesting and even mixed in some interesting historical news about the area.  I added information about famous people that had lived or visited the area too.  We had a great time and by going to different websites we were able to find out more information about houses, people, nearby places, schools, and opportunities than he had ever seen before.  This is a man who has lived and worked in the same area for twenty years!  When I pulled up a song from one of our areas famous recording artists it really made the whole experience come alive.
After an hour of looking into the past, the present and all the opportunities available I asked him, “Do you think this type of information relationship building is worthwhile?”

He was smiling.  He realized what so many successful people do; “knowing how to use the tools that are available is more important than having tools and not knowing how to use them!”

Today he called me and told me how he just spent an hour with a couple in front of his computer and they commented to him on how, “this worked out much better than just being driven around.”  He told me they enjoyed finding out about the famous people that have lived here and really appreciated seeing the historical photos of the area.   With all that they learned about the area this afternoon, they now know exactly where they want to look for a home tomorrow evening!
Information relationship building isn’t new but Information relationship building in real time with audio, visual, archival and historical information is.  Making a great real time area presentation takes practice.   I suggest you try competing with someone you work with to see who can come up with the best real time presentation.  When you can mix pictures, videos, audio, different news stories and historical data all in real time; it can be exciting and fun for you, your competitor and most importantly, your clients!

I hope you enjoy a cold lemonade with your fish dinner tonight.
